This is real old news, but for those that don't know how to do it. This is how you normalize everyone's volume in ventrilo. That way every one will be the same volume regardless of what settings they personally have.
**Some people will be quiet or louder depending on the quality of their mic and distance from their mic, but for the most part it makes everyone fairly close to the same volume.**
Go to Setup
Enable Direct Sound
Select the SFX Button
Select Compressor and click Add.
Under Compressor Properties use the following settings:
Gain = Adjust for how loud you want people to be. (I use 15)
Attack = 0.01
Release = Around 500
Threshold = Around -30
Ratio = 100
Pre delay = 4.0
For the individual players that are louder or softer, adjust their individual volume as you normally would.

Thanks Sticx! We had this posted somewhere once but it's a good reminder.
I also want to remind everyone about ducking... great feature!

Reduces the volume of games when people talk on vent. I personally hate it because people tend to talk during story dialog. But other people love it.

I am pretty sure it lowers the volume of the game your in when someone speaks on Ventrilo, so you can hear people better.
lol, we posted almost at the exact same time :P
