Best plot line in single player game?

Just curious what you guy's opinion is on the best plot line you have ever seen in a single player game would be. What kept you playing well past when you should have gone to bed or class just because the story was so good you couldn't stop? Anything with dramatic twists and turns, surprise endings, or just general suck you in and keep you in suspense drama?

I'm sure I'm missing some...I think there have been more well-written original game scripts than movie scripts in the last decade or so.

I personally love KOTOR. This 1st meeting with arch-enemy... it was so great!
Also 1st Deus Ex was great game...

But the winner is The Witcher... Ending was so suprised for me...When I noticed, that this all was my fault... Great ending

It's ok to be a fanboy for Bioware in regards to story.

They have always put more effort into character development/voice acting than most.

You can tell by the way they use professionals, as opposed to some wooden sounding half-wits putting on unconvincing British accents like most developers do (if it's set in the past).

LOL...oh come on I've come to love those wooden-sounding half-wits for their camp-factor.

I just noticed the "Full Throttle" at the bottom of your post...that was another great one, especially for its time. Those are the days before LucasArts lost its respectability...they eventually located it within the packaging of KOTOR and Battlefront...someone must've put it in a time capsule : P

I would include Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders, and Secret of Monkey Island if we're going back that far too!

I was on the fence about including the Elder Scrolls...awesome games, but it's never really been the story that sucked me in, just the awesomeness and openness of the game (similar to the GTA series).

KOTOR was probably the best plot twist I have experienced yet when discovering who you really were.

Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed comes in a close second.
DA:O was also really well done, the second not so much.

Agree, best twist since finding out Darth Vader was Luke's Father.

Monkey Island as well, finding out who LeChuck really is in MI2 was great.
