Chapter 1: The Attack circa 10 BTC

The sun was shining bright and happily over the world of Mon Calamari, also known as Dac. The reflection of the light rays on the water gave very beautiful sunsets, but at the time they were only glares in the corners of your eyes that distracted from work or play. No Mon Calamari cared much. Life was too busy now, with the war just around the corner. They did have a Republic Defense Garrison stationed in orbit, but everyone knew that wouldn't be worth anything in a real attack. Dac, a very Republic-supportive world economically, politically, and socially, was also a prime target because of its shipyards. Sure, the only produced civilian craft, but anyone that wanted could easily convert it. Which brought to mind the question, "Why hadn't the Republic done so?" It could certainly use the extra resources. But many Mon Calamari opposed the change voluntarily. Many of these and more feared a force labor program from the Sith, but didn't want to do anything about it.
So then you had the other side, who actively tried to lobby such a change. They're whole argument was that they would rather do it for the Republic than the Sith, because with the Sith they would have to anyway. In short: they achieved marginal success. They got the permission to start building Republic aligned military vessels, but under the condition it was in a new shipyard. The main benefactors of such change was the Critou clan, holding a military discipline kind of ancestry for a long time. That, and they were rich from commercial monopolies on the yacht lines in the normal shipyards. Definitely not the most rich, powerful, or influential clan, but they had enough. So under their funding, a new shipyard was built, and war ships slowly built from it.
The intended effect of slightly boosting the Republic war effort was achieved. But then, there was one large side effect many overlooked. Not only was Dac an economic target now, but an actual military/strategic one. The leaked news of this new shipyard made it more likely for Dac to be attacked by the Sith. And the Sith did this, within a galactic standard week. A sizable force of an attack fleet made its way to the Dac System, at the same time distracting the Republic from their main fleet, and threatening a key asset.
