How else will they redeem Luke if he doesn't fall?  (Those screenwriters love their monomyth!)

Here's the thing, I'm not saying that Luke falling to the DS couldn't be interesting regardless of whether he is KR or not.

However, it's really out of character for him if you watch the OT.  The difference between Anakin and Luke is that Luke isn't nearly as angry or petulant.  Yeah, he could be a little impatient and hasty - even irresponsible.  However, Luke had too much ... heart to be evil.

I know the whole "love can turn jedi evil" bit, but I don't buy that with Luke.  He was ready to die before he would turn to the darkside in ROTJ.  He didn't turn to the DS or kill Vader b/c he loved his father despite the evil things he did - that was what makes ROTJ so cool.  How often does the primary antagonist convert in a movie?

Having Luke go DS might be interesting, but it betrays his character.

 I just point out that we haven't known his character in universe for 30 years, so let's be patient and see what happens!  A lot can change a person in that time, even a Jedi I suppose...

When I heard that first line I immediately thought:

 

Regarding Luke I don't think they will make him DS. Instead he will just become cynical in his old age and go into hiding believing that the galaxy is better off without the Jedi/Sith and the force. My guess is that his arc and redemption will be him realizing that the galaxy needs the Jedi once he sees the threat of this "New Order" and Rey convinces him.

The big theory I remember hearing when the movie was announced was that Luke withdrew from the galactic stage due his power being dangerous and that he was worried about falling. 

I had this crazy idea that Kylo Ren before he joined the knights of Ren was either a Skywalker or Luke's apprentice and his fall is why Luke is in hiding.

Okay, now the possibility of Kylo Ren being Luke's progeny is VERY compelling without breaking character, particularly given that Kylo could have easily inherited a little more Anakin/Vader and a little less Padme.

So, while I can accept the notion that Luke and/or Leia reproducing is a freaking dangerous prospect, I just can't accept Luke falling to the DS...
