re: Story of a Commando

Chatper VII:

After having a month's respite from any combat due to the injuries of some of the squadmates, Tim's squad, Omega, was ready for action once more. As soon as they were up, they got a new mission. One of the Republic's best squads just has to be on the field as much as possible they were told. This time their mission was on Tatooine. They had to provide protection for a Hutt who promised help to the Republic's cause in return for a safe relocation to another planet. Apparently his decision had gotten him some Sith trouble.

Their shuttle dropped them right at the Hutt's palace. They would have to proceed on ground to the area where a bigger, better armed Republic ship could land. Were it too small, it would get blown to bits by the Imperial fighters patrolling the planet. The shuttle they landed with wasn't a Republic one, it was a hired, barely working bucket of bolts, that was barely able to fly.

As they entered the courtyard, Tim told his men to go inspect the vehicles they will be traveling in. He had to go see the Hutt's chief of defense. As he found him he intterogated him briefly about the training and preparation of the men who will be defending the Hutt. They were common rabble, but better than what Tim had anticipated. They actually looked like they knew what end of the blaster they have to point at the enemy.

Omega squad put some additional firepower on the land cruisers, and they were off. The first few minutes it seemed that the ride would be peaceful. But everyone on board those vehicles knew better. Everyone but the Hutt, who seemed to be enjoying himself to no end. And surely enough, the Sith attacked soon. The first few attacks were light. They were probing the defenses. The Sith tried again and again, gathering info on their defenses. But they didn’t know that Omega wasn’t joining the defense when they were scouting like that. Tim was certain of that being their ace up the sleeve.

With each wave of the attack, the defenders were blooded a bit more. While Tim and Bantha did provide medical support, Omega still did not join the defense. And soon the Sith struck with apparently everything they got. They immobilized the convoy and surrounded it. That was when Omega joined the fray. All the sudden, Sith soldiers were being mowed down like grass. They started retreating with no apparent order. “They didn’t expect Republic’s finest troopers to be on the defense here.” Tim smirked to himself. “Got a bit overconfident too…” But deep down in his gut, he felt this fight was far from over. And it seemed to be correct. Soon the Sith attacked again. And again. “They’re trying to tire us out!” Tim realized. He gave his orders. Omega would provide cover while some mechanics would repair the damage on the cruisers so they would get a move on again.

After about an hour of a very tiring battle, the mechanics signaled their success. Omega boarded as fast as they could and the convoy was off again. Tim was also glad to see that the Hutt really had some competent hirelings about him. The firepower that Omega installed on the ship was never used by Omega. The Hutt’s men knew what to do. They were progressing slowly but steadily, due to the damage the cruisers have already sustained. Even though they have been reinforced prior to departure, these cruisers were still civilian vessels, not military ones. The death count wasn’t high on the defenders side, and that bolstered morale. But then again, due to the moving of both them and the targets, there weren’t many dead on the Sith side as well.

About half an hour later, they reached a canyon. Tim saw, with much dismay that the cruisers aren’t going to fit. There was just no way. He turned and walked to the Hutt’s Defense Chief. “These cruisers aren’t going to fit in there.” He said, pointing at the canyon.

“We know that, we’re walkin’ from now on!” The trandoshian replied. Tim eyed him coldly. “Why wasn’t I informed of this stage of the plan?” The trando eyed him back. “Would you have done something differently if you knew?” To that Tim had to stand down. “You’re right. I wouldn’t. He shouted in his comm: “Omega, disembark. We’re going on foot from now on.” He heard some grunts of disapproval, but there was nothing he could do about it. “Come on, come on, we don’t have all day.” He turned back to the trandoshian. “You’re carrying the fatass. We most certainly aren’t.” The trando snorted in laughter and gave some orders to his own men. “We need some strategy for this.” Tim told him. “We can’t just walking in like that. The risk of an ambush is too great.” Tim stood there, pondering. The trandoshian stood there looking at Tim. It was obvious that he won’t give any ideas. “We’re going to scale the walls of the canyon and proceed on them. You go trough.” It was the best he could come up with. The trandoshian nodded, and walked away. His men were already drawing straws as to who is going to carry the Hutt trough the canyon. Apparently other vehicles were waiting for them there. Everyone but Tim ascended the left side of the canyon. They did so because the right side provided no cover, and any troops there would be dead within seconds of being spotted.

About halfway trough the canyon, Tim came to some sort of a small cliff. He saw that for the next fifty meters, he would be cut off from any support from his squad. He didn’t like that one bit, but he still descended it. The cliff was smooth, and had no cracks, meaning there was no climbing back on it. And as soon as he reached the bottom, Tim knew he made one of the worst mistakes in his life. There were about ten Sith waiting there, in ambush. Warriors and Inquisitors, five of each. “Well that isn’t good for my health.” Tim said out loud. The Sith started grinning and stepping toward Tim. Lightsabers out, force holding him still. He couldn’t even mutter a word to warn his squad. He still tried to resist the grip, but since there were at least five of them holding him, it didn’t do much. A Sith warrior lifted his lightsaber and prepared to deliver the blow. Tim looked at the Sith’s eyes with defiance.

But the blow never came. Instead, there was a green lightsaber sticking out of the Sith’s chest. The grip on Tim let go, as they turned around to face another threat. There was a Jedi there, with his lightsaber in his hand, standing defiant against the nine remaining Sith. He looked at Tim, nodded, and threw himself against them. Tim, on the other hand, pulled his knife out and slashed an inquisitor’s neck right when she tried to attack the Jedi. This action confused the other Sith, as they were now unsure which one to kill first. They did not expect Tim to put up such a fight. Tim managed to stab one more, while the Jedi cut down three more of them. Then Tim was pushed aside with the Force, and by the time he managed to stand back up, the fight was done. The Jedi stood victorious, and smiled at Tim. And collapsed.

Tim rushed to the fallen Jedi, and brought out his medical gear. The Jedi appeared to be still conscious and Tim tried to establish contact with him. “Hey there mr. Jedi, sir,” He began, “thanks for the rescue. Had you not interfered, I would have been a goner by now.” He started scanning the Jedi for injuries, and applying treatment where necessary. “Name’s Tim, Tim Maselj, Combat Medic and leader of the Omega squad. At your service.” The Jedi looked up and said: “Well met Tim Maselj. My name is Nwahs Nirom.” They shook hands and then, Tim instructed Nwahs to lay still. He sprayed some kolto on Nwahses wounds and sat him up slowly. He radioed his squad to continue the mission and that he will follow as soon as he is able to do so. He sat down besides Nwahs and they talked for a while. When Nwahs was well enough to stand, they shook hands and parted ways. But Tim knew, deep down, that this person was a friend. And that they would meet again, in the future.

Then he headed down to the canyon exit. It wasn't far, and apparently, his squad took one of the vehicles and waited for him to arrive. Tim was never happier when he saw that, but he knew they compromised the mission, and decided to scold them later. Much later. The mission was a success, with the Hutt safely on one of the Republic planets, and Omega suffering no casualties.
